What to look for before carrying an equipment line
What a dealer should check before taking on a car wash equipment line: territory, service support, parts availability, training and US compliance.
The right way to size a truck wash system is to start from three things you already know: the size of the vehicles you run, how many of them need washing each day, and the window of time you have to wash them in. A catalogue model number comes last, not first. Get the order right and the machine you end up with will keep the yard moving. Get it wrong and you buy either a bottleneck or a machine that spends most of the day idle.
Heavy vehicles are not just large cars, and a wash built for them has to clear the envelope of the biggest thing you will drive through it. Measure your tallest unit, including roof fittings, air lines and antennae. Measure the widest, including mirrors if they stay out. Then note the longest, because length decides whether a fixed gantry that moves along the vehicle or a drive-through arrangement makes more sense.
Mixed fleets are where sizing usually goes wrong. A depot that runs tractor units, curtain-siders, tankers and the odd tipper is asking one machine to handle very different shapes and surfaces. It is worth listing every body type honestly rather than designing around the average. The wash has to accommodate the outliers, not the mean. Once you know what you are washing, count how many and when. A fleet of forty that all return between four and six in the evening is a very different sizing problem from forty spread evenly across a shift. The number that matters is not vehicles per day, it is vehicles inside your available wash window.
Work it backwards. If you have to wash thirty vehicles in a two-hour window before the morning departures, you need a system that clears roughly one every four minutes, allowing for drive-on and drive-off. Published throughput figures are a starting point for that maths, but they describe ideal conditions, not a wet yard with a queue and a driver waiting for a handover. Read what throughput figures actually mean before you take any per-hour number at face value, and always leave headroom. A wash sized exactly to peak demand has no slack for a breakdown or a bad-weather surge.
A wash is only as fast as the yard around it. The cleanest machine in the world is a bottleneck if trucks cannot line up to it or pull away from it cleanly. Sizing means looking at the approach, the standing space for a queue, and the exit, so a washed vehicle can leave without blocking the one behind.
Think about turning circles, the gradient of the approach, and whether drivers can get on and off the wash line without reversing across the yard. If the wash forces a three-point turn, you have added minutes to every cycle that no throughput figure will show you. A heavy-vehicle wash uses a lot of water and a lot of power, and both have to be there before the machine can run at the rate you sized it for. Undersized supply is a common reason a wash never hits its rated throughput: the pumps are waiting on the water, not the other way round.
Discharge is the other constraint. Wash water from trucks carries road grime, oil residue and sometimes cargo traces, and where it goes is governed by local rules that vary by site. Confirm your local discharge and permit conditions early, because the answer can change what treatment or reclaim you need to build in. Designing water reuse into the system from the start is a recognised way to cut both supply demand and discharge volume; the US EPA sets out reclaim and water-efficiency practices for commercial vehicle washes in its WaterSense guidance on vehicle washes. Sizing the supply, the treatment and the machine together avoids the situation where one of the three quietly caps the other two.
Touchless and brush systems trade differently on heavy vehicles. Brushes move dried-on road film and traffic grime faster on large flat panels, which matters when your cycle time is tight. Touchless is gentler on decals, tanks and delicate surfaces but often needs more dwell time and stronger chemistry to reach the same result. That dwell time is part of your sizing, because a slower method inside a fixed window means fewer vehicles cleared.
