What to look for before carrying an equipment line
What a dealer should check before taking on a car wash equipment line: territory, service support, parts availability, training and US compliance.
Water recycling in a car wash captures the water that has already run off the vehicle, cleans it enough to reuse, and sends it back through the wash. A reclaim system does not make a wash run on no water at all. It cuts how much fresh water the site draws from the mains by reusing the same water for the heavy early stages of the wash, while keeping fresh water for the parts of the cycle that need it. For a site owner, the practical question is how much of the demand a reclaim loop takes off your utility connection, and what it costs you in space, maintenance and chemistry to keep that loop clean.
A car wash produces dirty water continuously while it is open. That runoff carries road grime, mud, oils and spent detergent. The effluent from professional washing is a mix of solids, hydrocarbons and cleaning chemistry, which is exactly why it cannot simply be pumped back through the machine untreated.
A reclaim system works the water in stages. Runoff drains from the wash bay into a series of settling pits or tanks. Heavier solids drop out under gravity in the first chamber. Oils and lighter material separate in the next. From there the water passes through filtration, and often some form of treatment to control odour and bacteria, before it is stored in a reclaim tank and pumped back to the wash. The cleaner the water leaves each stage, the more of the wash cycle it can safely serve.
The reused water handles the work where absolute purity does not matter, such as the pre-soak, the initial high pressure knock-down of dirt, and the underbody and wheel wash. This is where a wash spends most of its water, so recycling it is where the savings sit.
Reclaimed water is fine for shifting mud. It is not right for the final rinse. If you rinse a car with recycled water, whatever dissolved solids that water still carries will dry on the paint as spotting, and the finish will look worse than if you had not rinsed at all. So the final rinse, and any spot-free or reverse-osmosis rinse, runs on fresh water.
That is the honest picture of a recycling wash. It reuses water for the dirty end of the cycle and draws fresh water for the clean end. The size of the fresh-water demand that remains depends on your machine type, your throughput and how many stages you choose to run on reclaim. Vehicle washing is a meaningful water user, which is why the EPA WaterSense guidance for vehicle washing treats reclaim and efficient fixtures as the main levers for bringing that demand down.
Fresh-water use per vehicle varies widely with the wash type and how it is set up. Operators who invest in reclaim do it because the reused portion of the cycle is large enough to move their water bill and their connection sizing. Published operator cases, such as chains that have reduced water use through efficiency measures and washes built around advanced conservation, show that reclaim and fresh water working together is now the normal way to build a high-volume wash, not an exotic add-on.
The value of that saving depends on your site. If your mains connection is generous and water is cheap, reclaim earns its keep slowly. If your connection is constrained, your tariff is high, or your permit to discharge is limited, reclaim can be the difference between a viable site and one that stalls. Reusing water rather than drawing and discharging it fresh is the core idea behind water reuse in general, and a wash is one of the clearest places to apply it.
Reused water is not blank. It carries residual detergent, dissolved solids and whatever the last twenty cars left behind. That changes how your chemistry behaves. Dosing set for fresh water can foam differently, rinse differently and film differently on reclaimed water, and water that is left to sit warm in a tank can turn and smell.
This is why reclaim is a chemistry decision as much as a plumbing one. The treatment stage has to keep the reclaim tank stable, and the dosing has to be set for the water the machine is actually using at each stage. Get that wrong and you either waste chemical or hand customers a car that does not look clean, which is the fastest way to lose repeat trade.
Reclaim is far cheaper to design in than to retrofit, because it changes your civils. The settling pits, the tank room and the pump set all need space and fall in the drainage, and that has to be laid out before the slab is poured. A few decisions to settle early:
